FRALUBEC Initiative

From 2012 to 2015, the IHA was deeply involved in leading the FRALUBEC project – Local development and global strategy for two aluminium multinationals in the 20th century.

Project Overview

Two major aluminium producers were at the heart of the FRALUBEC project: Pechiney in France and Alcan in Canada, the latter having acquired the former in 2004.

How have these two companies pursued international strategies over the course of their history? What logic has governed their relationships to market sharing, competition, and cooperation?

How have they shaped their regions (using the examples of the Maurienne region for Pechiney, and the Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean and Mauricie regions for Alcan), and what is their legacy, both physical and cultural?

Project partners

This three-year project has received financial support from the Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR – French National Research Agency) and the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Société et culture (FQRSC - Quebec Research Fund - Society and Culture).

Coordinated by the Centre Roland Mousnier (Université Paris IV Sorbonne, Dominique Barjot) and the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (Pierre Deschênes), it also involves the LARHRA (CNRS / Université Pierre Mendès France, Anne Dalmasso), the Université du Québec à Montréal (Lucie K. Morisset), the DRM (Université Paris Dauphine, Anne Pezet) and the Université du Québec à Trois Rivières (Pierre Lanthier).

IHA and the Centre québecois de recherche et de développement de l'aluminium (CQRDA - Quebec Aluminum Research and Development Center) actively supported the project, contributing their technical and historical knowledge of the aluminium industry, as well as their skills in project management, digital humanities and heritage enhancement.
