Histalu: Symposium: “Metal Structures: Ideal Constructions? 1850

This symposium offers a journey through the history of prefabricated metal construction, from the first cast-iron structures of the 18th century to contemporary and future developments. It will explore the evolution of prefabrication techniques for iron, steel, and aluminium, as well as their applications in architecture.

The presentations will also highlight current challenges related to sustainable development, circularity, and innovation, while exploring the future of construction, particularly in space.

These two-day event is organized by the Royal Federation of Belgian Engineering Associations, the Heritage and History Platform, the Polytechnic Faculty of Mons - UMONS, the National School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture of Lille, and the University of Lille, with the support of AWaP (Walloon Heritage Agency), PIWB (Industrial Heritage Wallonia-Brussels), the Faculty of Architecture at ULB (Free University of Brussels), and the University of Artois

Nathalie Postic, our collections promotion manager and iconographer, will deliver the following presentation there in November, on the second day: “Building (and Decorating) with Aluminium in the Second Half of the 20th Century: Studies of the Photographic Collection of 'L’Aluminium français'.”
