En cette fin d’année, l’IHA est présent sur de nombreux fronts. Voici un aperçu de nos dernières activités…
Dernière minute : séminaire du 8 décembre 2007
La 5e séance du séminaire « Énergie et matériaux, Mondes médiévaux et modernes », coordonnée par Claire Mabire La Caille et Danielle Arribet-Deroin, est consacrée à l’orfèvrerie. Le séminaire accueillera Jean Plateau et Thierry Renaux qui présenteront « L’orfèvrerie, la principale application de l’aluminium dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle ».
Ce séminaire (Anne-Françoise Garçon et Danielle Arribet-Deroin, Université Paris I – Panthéon-Sorbonne) est consacré à l’histoire des techniques des mondes médiévaux et modernes. Il lie intimement pratiques de terrain (archéologie) et dépouillement d’archives (source écrite, iconographie).
Ouvert à tous, il se tiendra à l’Amphi Dupuis, au Centre Mahler (9 rue Mahler, 75004 Paris), de 14 h à 18 h, le samedi 8 décembre 2007.

- Les techniques de l'orfèvrerie au Haut Moyen Âge par Daniel Perrier, conservateur au Musée des Antiquités Nationales et professeur à l'Ecole du Louvre
- Évolution des pratiques de l'orfèvrerie aux XIIe et XIIIe siècles : l'exemple des reliefs de châsse par Emmanuelle Riand, docteur
- L'orfèvrerie, la principale application de l'aluminium dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle par Jean Plateau, métallurgiste, ingénieur civil des mines et Thierry Renaux, chargé de mission Patrimoine et communication, Institut pour l'histoire de l'aluminium

Espace Alu, musée de l’aluminium
 Le 29 octobre 2007, a ouvert à Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne (Savoie, France) Espace Alu, un espace d’exposition dédiée à l’aluminium — le premier en Europe !
À travers une exposition ludique et interactive sur 600 m2, ce centre d'interprétation retrace l'aventure de l'aluminium sous tous ses aspects (scientifique, économique, industriel, culturel et social) des origines à nos jours par de nombreux documents de qualités (témoignages, vidéos, objets et photographies).
L’IHA, membre du comité de gestion, a suivi toutes les étapes de création de ce lieu d’exposition, de sa gestation à son inauguration.

Plusieurs publications :
Parution du deuxième numéro hors série des Cahiers d’histoire de l’aluminium.
Intitulé « Comparative Perspectives on the Norwegian and Canadian Aluminium Industries », ce hors série intégralement en anglais présente les résultats du premier séminaire du CARP (Comparative Aluminium Research Program).
Organisée à Trondheim (Norvège) en novembre 2006, cette rencontre a réuni des chercheurs canadiens, français et norvégiens.

 Alucam, un destin africain – 50 ans d’aluminium au Cameroun, 1957-2007, sous la direction de Maurice Laparra et d’Ivan Grinberg, Aix-en-Provence : REF.2C, 2007. La rédaction de cet ouvrage, publié avec le concours de la compagnie Alucam, été coordonnée par l’IHA. Huit auteurs ont apporté leurs contribution pour réaliser un livre bilingue français-anglais, contenant plus d’une centaine d’illustrations en couleur. « Implantée au Cameroun en 1957, Alucam produit aujourd’hui 100 000 tonnes d’aluminium par an, en exporte les deux tiers et fabrique des tôles ondulées ou des ustensiles de ménage pour les marchés africains. Ce livre explore 50 ans d’une histoire qui trouve son origine dans la France coloniale et se déploie dans un pays devenu indépendant en 1960. Créée et longtemps gérée par un fleuron de l’industrie française, Pechiney, dans le cadre d’un partenariat durable avec la République du Cameroun, l’entreprise construit son avenir dans le cadre du groupe Rio Tinto Alcan. Analyser l’impact d’Alucam sur l’économie et la société camerounaises, sa contribution à l’industrialisation du Cameroun, les modèles sociaux et organisationnels mis en œuvre et les effets de la mondialisation, telles sont les ambitions des huit spécialistes camerounais et français qui ont contribué à la rédaction de ce livre. »

Pechiney ? …Vendu ! Un livre de Philippe Thaure qui met en perspective la "mort presque programmée" d’un fleuron de l’industrie française.
Les Presses de l’École des Mines de Paris publient un ouvrage qui "retrace, depuis les années soixante, les actions de diversification effectuées sous l’influence des politiques ou des lobbies d’ingénieurs, les investissements hâtifs ou divisés et les erreurs de stratégie qui conduisirent à la mort presque programmée de Pechiney."
L’auteur, Philippe Thaure, est un homme du sérail, ingénieur civil des mines, ancien de Pechiney ayant fini sa carrière chez Alcoa. S’appuyant sur des archives publiques et privées et sur un ensemble d’entretiens inédits avec d’anciens responsables de Pechiney et d’Alcan, il propose une lecture informée et éclairante de l’histoire du producteur français d’aluminium.

Last minute: seminar of December 8th, 2007
The 5th session of the seminar « Énergie et matériaux, Mondes médiévaux et modernes », (Energy and Materials, Medieval and Modern Worlds), coordinated by Claire Mabire La Caille and Danielle Arribet-Deroin is focused on the theme of « Goldsmith’s Work ». The seminar will welcome Jean Plateau and Thierry Renaux who will present « Tableware and Jewellery, the main uses of aluminium during the second half of the 19th century ».
This seminar (Anne-Françoise Garçon and Danielle Arribet-Deroin, University Paris I – Panthéon-Sorbonne) deals with the history of technologies in the medieval and modern worlds. It links archeology and archives analysis (written and iconographic sources) in a profound approch.
Open to the General Public, it will take place in the Centre Mahler (9 rue Mahler, 75004 Paris), from 14h00 to 18h00, on December 8th, 2007.

Espace Alu, museum of aluminium
On October 29th, 2007, there opened in Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne (Savoie, France) Espace Alu, an exhibition centre dedicated to aluminium — the first in Europe!
Through a playful and interactive exhibition — 6500 square feet —, this centre retraces the adventure of aluminium in all its aspects (scientific, economic, industrial, cultural and social) from the origins until today by presenting many documents of quality (testimonies, videos, objects and photographs).
The Institute, a member of the Management Committee of the museum, has followed all the stages of the creation of this exhibition centre.

Publications:
The second special issue of the Journal of History of Aluminium has just been published.
Entitled “Comparative Perspectives on the Norwegian and Canadian Aluminium Industries”, this special issue, totally written in English, presents the results of the first conference of the CARP (Comparative Aluminium Research Program).
Organised in Trondheim (Norway) in November 2006, this meeting united Canadian, French and Norwegian scholars.

Alucam, an African destiny – 50 years of aluminium in Cameroon, 1957-2007, under the supervision of Maurice Laparra and Ivan Grinberg, Aix-en-Provence : REF.2C, 2007.
The writing of this book, published with the support of the Alucam company, was coordinated by the IHA. Eight authors contributed to the work to obtain a bilingual book English-French, with more than a hundred coloured pictures.
“Created in Cameroon in 1957, Alucam produces today 100 000 tonnes of aluminium per year, of which two thirds are exported, and manufactures corrugated sheet and household utensils for markets in Africa. This book relates a story spanning 50 years of history, starting in colonial France and taking place in a country that became independent in 1960. The company that was created and for many years managed by a flagship of French industry, Pechiney, in the framework of a lasting partnership with the Republic of Cameroon, is now building its future as part of the Rio Tinto Alcan group. The eight Cameroonian and French specialists who have contributed to this book have attempted to analyse Alucam’s impact on Cameroon’s economy and society, its contribution to the industrialisation of Cameroon, the social and organisational models it introduced and the effects of globalisation.”

Pechiney?... Vendu! [Pechiney?... Sold!]. A book of Philippe Thaure which traces the “almost programmed death” of one of the flowers of French industry.
The Presses de l’école des Mines (the publication office of the French Mines School) publish a work which “follows, since 1960’s, the actions of diversification effected under the influence of politicians and engineers lobbies, the ill-timed or over-diversified investments and the errors of strategy which lead to the almost programmed death of Pechiney”. The author, Philippe Thaure, with his intimate knowledge of this industry, a civil engineering minor, a former employee of Pechiney, ended his career with Alcoa. Through public and privates archives and unpublished interviews with past managers of Pechiney and Alcan, he purposes an informed and enlightened reading of the history of the French producer of aluminium.
