Nous sommes particulièrement heureux de vous présenter le livre écrit par Jean Plateau et Thierry Renaux L’aluminium et Paul Morin au Moulin noir (1857-1890). Un maire pour Nanterre, un métal pour l’industrie. Issu d’une collaboration fructueuse entre l’IHA et la Société d’Histoire de Nanterre, cet ouvrage est paru à l’occasion des Journées européennes du patrimoine. Il retrace une aventure industrielle méconnue, celle de la première usine de fabrication de l’aluminium fondée en 1857, et renouvelle après plusieurs années de recherches l’historiographie des débuts de l’aluminium.

Jean Plateau est né en 1923. Ingénieur civil des mines, il a consacré sa vie professionnelle à la recherche métallurgique. Depuis vingt ans maintenant, il constitue une collection d’objets en aluminium unique au monde qui compte près de 20 000 objets.

Thierry Renaux est né en 1976. Après un master d’histoire, il est chargé de mission dans le domaine du patrimoine à l’IHA et travaille depuis plusieurs années en partenariat avec J. Plateau pour la valorisation et l’exploitation de la collection.

De cette collection, les plus beaux objets de la période chimique de l’aluminium (1854-1890) sont reproduits dans le livre. Si l’histoire de l’usine du Moulin noir à Nanterre est symbolique de la naissance d’un matériau nouveau, elle croise également le destin d’un homme au parcours atypique qui donne son nom à la première société exploitant l’usine du Moulin noir : Paul Morin, acteur de la vie politique française sous la Troisième République.

L’ouvrage de J. Plateau et T. Renaux, qui fera référence, est écrit dans un style limpide et enrichi de nombreuses illustrations dont un portfolio en couleurs.

We are especially happy to present you the book written by Jean Plateau et Thierry Renaux L’aluminium et Paul Morin au Moulin noir (1857-1890). Un maire pour Nanterre, un métal pour l’industrie. Born from a profitable collaboration between the IHA and the Nanterre Historical Society, this book was issued on the occasion of the European Heritage Days. It traces the unknown industrial adventure of the first aluminium factory created in 1857. This book, the result of many years of research, extends and considerably enriches the historiography of the beginning of the aluminium.

Jean Plateau was born in 1923. A state-qualified civil and mining engineer, he dedicated his professional life to metallurgic research. During twenty years, he has built-up an extraordinary collection of aluminium objects which now counts around 20,000 pieces.

Thierry Renaux was born in 1976. After a Masters Degree in History, he is now the heritage and communication manager at the IHA and, in partnership with J. Plateau, he has worked for many years for the promotion of the collection. 

From this collection, the most beautiful objects of the chemical aluminium period (1854-1890) are reproduced in the book. The history of the Moulin noir factory symbolizes the birth of the new material and marks the fortune of Paul Morin, a man with an unusual destiny. He was a French politician during the Third Republic gave his name to the first company which produced aluminium at the Moulin noir factory.

The book of J. Plateau et T. Renaux, which will become a reference work, is written in a clear and pleasant style and is enriched with numerous coloured illustrations.
