Europe Commission
European Historical Aluminium Committee (EAHC)

For any information or contacts on this commission, write to histalu@histalu.org

Europe was one of the cradles of aluminium and the many companies that developed around the metal made a lasting mark on the continent’s history. The EAHC was created under the aegis of the Brussels-based European Aluminium Association with support from IHA. It brings together manufacturers from different European countries and historians who are interested in this major industry for the European economy. EAHC has supported or initiated several studies – see IHA collections.

The many leading companies include:
  • Alcan Aluminium Limited Europe, France
  • Alluminio Italiano, Italie
  • Aluminio Español, Espagne
  • Alusuisse (Aluminium Industrie Aktien Gesellschaft – AIAG), Suisse
  • Árdal og Sunndal Verk (ASV), Norvège
  • British Aluminium Company (BACO), Grande-Bretagne
  • Compagnie belge pour l’industrie de l’aluminium, Belgique
  • Giulini Gebrüder, Allemagne
  • Montecatini, Italie
  • Norsk Hydro, Norvège
  • Pechiney, France
  • Sidal (Société industrielle de l'aluminium), Belgique
  • Vereinigte Aluminiumgesellschaft Werke (VAW), Allemagne

In 1998, EAHC, in partnership with the University of Provence, organised an international symposium on the history of the European aluminium industry during the post-war boom. The proceedings were published in a special issue of Cahiers d'histoire de l'aluminium in 2001.
