Collection Jean-Albert Grégoire - Institut pour l'histoire de l'aluminium
Two major events happened in 2009 for the future of the collection of cars and objects constituted by the engineer Jean-Albert Gregoire.

Firstly, IHA, which had been the manager of the Collection, became its owner through an agreement concluded in June 2009 with Jean-Philippe Puig, Chairman of Aluminium Pechiney. Following this change of ownership, the collection, which was named “Collection Aluminium Pechiney - Jean-Albert Grégoire”, has been renamed “Collection Jean-Albert Grégoire - Institute for the History of Aluminium”.

Secondly, on the 9th of July, the President of IHA, Maurice Laparra, signed a convention of deposit of and for the vehicles and the mechanical objects and parts of the Collection with the “City of Automobile” in Mulhouse, France. This convention replaces that which was signed in 2001 with the Museum of Le Mans ( Musée des 24 Heures-Circuit de la Sarthe).

The transfer of the Collection from the museum of Le Mans to that of Mulhouse will take place in November 2009. The integration of the vehicles into the global exhibition of the City of Automobile in Mulhouse will be effective as from the beginning of 2010.

In order to give to the public a knowledge of the content of the remarkable “Collection Jean-Albert Grégoire - Institute for the History of Aluminium”, an article, accompanied by an inventory of the vehicles and chassis, will be published in the next issue of the Journal for the History of Aluminium. In addition, each piece of this collection had been photographed and analysed in order to be consultable on the Aluminium Digital Library (www.culturalu.org).

The death of G.-Y. Kervern, the instigator of IHA
The Institute for the History of Aluminium was plunged into mourning by the death of its creator, Mr Georges-Yves Kervern, in December 2008.
He was a former student of the “École Polytechnique” (1955), Chief Engineer of the National Mining Service and graduated of the Institut d’études politiques [Institute of political studies, Paris, France]. Georges-Yves Kervern (1935-2008) followed an industrial career within Pechiney Ugine Kuhlmann then within Pechiney (1971-1987). When he left Pechiney, he worked in banking and insurance.
In 1986, on the occasion of the centenary of the aluminium smelting process, events, publications and exhibitions were organized, with a strong focus on the history of aluminium. At that time, Georges-Yves Kervern was Chairman of the French Aluminium Association and president of the Pechiney aluminium group. He took this occasion to instigate the creation of IHA. His objective was to make durable the effort which had already begun to preserve and develop (in the framework of exchanges between University and Industry), the historical research on aluminium, paying particular attention to the importance of the international aspect of the work of the Institute from that time.
He personally deposited some of his archives with IHA and regularly contributed to the work of the Institute during the last twenty years.
As Visiting Professor to the Sorbonne University and author of many publications (among others on cyndinic – the science of risk), Georges-Yves Kervern had always expressed an important curiosity and intellectual open mind.
The Institute for the History of Aluminium addresses its sympathy to his family and his friends.
