ANR Crealu First Workshop
 | | Aluminium, a Material for Innovation and Creation. New Sources and Crossed Insights
Proceeding from the French National Research Agency founded CREALU project – Creation and Aluminium. From newly discovered industrial material to heritage object: invention, innovation and markets (19th-20th centuries) – this two days workshop aims at offering an overview of the new sources available for the study of alumina, aluminium and its alloys, considering their production as well as their main areas of applications. This exploration into sources will allow identifying dynamics and actors of innovation and creation, which are sometimes little known or even not known at all. The question of the development and publication of archival sources will be considered in a new perspective thanks to digital processes. This first CREALU workshop will also highlight the connections between unknown technical, archival and documentary collections in order to question the notion of heritage, particularly when this notion applies to technical innovation, but also to confront innovative technical objects and archives in a historical perspective. Collectors, anthropologists, museum professionals, historians specialized in the history of technical heritage will analyse the contribution of artefacts collection to the history of innovation.

Call for historical records on Bicycle and Aluminium
 | | Project organised by the Crealu research group in partnership with Musée d’art et d’industrie de Saint-Etienne
Aluminium in Bicycle, a part of the Crealu research project
The Créalu research project–“Creation and Aluminium: invention, innovation, markets (XIX-XXIth centuries)”-, which covers the metal’s cycle, from its discovery as a new industrial material through to its assimilation as heritage object, has chosen to dedicate one of its avenues of research on aluminium to the bicycle. The project is managed by the Centre de recherches historiques (EHESS/CNRS) and financed by the French National Research Agency. Créalu is bringing together the CRH, the Institute for the History of Aluminium, the Paris IV Sorbonne University, The University of Provence and Toulouse 2 University. To carry this project to fruition, the creation of a records collection dedicated to the applications of aluminium within the bicycle industry has been decided. These records will further enrich the collections of the Saint-Etienne Art and Industry Museum. A partnership is currently being concluded between the Institute for the History of Aluminium and the Museum, to collect, digitalize and preserve the records.
Purpose and practical details
Inventory
- Manufacturers of bicycles, components, and accessories in aluminium and its alloys
- Manufacturers using components in aluminium and aluminium alloys in their bicycles

"Alumina and Industrial Risk", an historical view on Hungary’s Red Sludge Crisis.
| | An online article from Philippe Mioche, Professor of Contemporary History, Provence University, Aix-Marseille (France).
Philippe Mioche, specialist in metallurgical History, comes back in this article on the Industrial Catastrophe which arrived in the alumina production plant in Ajka, a town about 100 miles from Budapest (Hungary), in October 2010.
He proposes an historical perspective about the environmental stakes bound to the alumina production and of the discharge of red sludge those industrial residues rich in iron oxide.
The history of the plant of Gardanne, main site of alumina production of Rio Tinto Alcan group (former Pechiney) in France, offers an overview of the crisis, the mobilisations and the compromises, which act around this question.
Through the contemporary evolution of the Gardanne plant and thanks to a ground investigation in former industrial sites of the agglomeration of Marseille, Philippe Mioche tries to evaluate the actual environmental impacts of a secular activity of alumina production in the South-East of the France.

Collection Jean-Albert Grégoire - Institut pour l'histoire de l'aluminium
| | Two major events happened in 2009 for the future of the collection of cars and objects constituted by the engineer Jean-Albert Gregoire.
Firstly, IHA, which had been the manager of the Collection, became its owner through an agreement concluded in June 2009 with Jean-Philippe Puig, Chairman of Aluminium Pechiney. Following this change of ownership, the collection, which was named “Collection Aluminium Pechiney - Jean-Albert Grégoire”, has been renamed “Collection Jean-Albert Grégoire - Institute for the History of Aluminium”.
Secondly, on the 9th of July, the President of IHA, Maurice Laparra, signed a convention of deposit of and for the vehicles and the mechanical objects and parts of the Collection with the “City of Automobile” in Mulhouse, France. This convention replaces that which was signed in 2001 with the Museum of Le Mans ( Musée des 24 Heures-Circuit de la Sarthe).
The transfer of the Collection from the museum of Le Mans to that of Mulhouse will take place in November 2009. The integration of the vehicles into the global exhibition of the City of Automobile in Mulhouse will be effective as from the beginning of 2010.
In order to give to the public a knowledge of the content of the remarkable “Collection Jean-Albert Grégoire - Institute for the History of Aluminium”, an article, accompanied by an inventory of the vehicles and chassis, will be published in the next issue of the Journal for the History of Aluminium. In addition, each piece of this collection had been photographed and analysed in order to be consultable on the Aluminium Digital Library (www.culturalu.org).

The death of G.-Y. Kervern, the instigator of IHA
| | The Institute for the History of Aluminium was plunged into mourning by the death of its creator, Mr Georges-Yves Kervern, in December 2008.
He was a former student of the “École Polytechnique” (1955), Chief Engineer of the National Mining Service and graduated of the Institut d’études politiques [Institute of political studies, Paris, France]. Georges-Yves Kervern (1935-2008) followed an industrial career within Pechiney Ugine Kuhlmann then within Pechiney (1971-1987). When he left Pechiney, he worked in banking and insurance.
In 1986, on the occasion of the centenary of the aluminium smelting process, events, publications and exhibitions were organized, with a strong focus on the history of aluminium. At that time, Georges-Yves Kervern was Chairman of the French Aluminium Association and president of the Pechiney aluminium group. He took this occasion to instigate the creation of IHA. His objective was to make durable the effort which had already begun to preserve and develop (in the framework of exchanges between University and Industry), the historical research on aluminium, paying particular attention to the importance of the international aspect of the work of the Institute from that time.
He personally deposited some of his archives with IHA and regularly contributed to the work of the Institute during the last twenty years.
As Visiting Professor to the Sorbonne University and author of many publications (among others on cyndinic – the science of risk), Georges-Yves Kervern had always expressed an important curiosity and intellectual open mind.
The Institute for the History of Aluminium addresses its sympathy to his family and his friends.
