Changes in the organisation of the IHA Team
| | There have been important changes recently in the IHA team.
On 15th of June, Thierry Renaux, formally Heritage and Communication Manager, left IHA and joined the “Association régionale du Conservatoire national des arts et métiers en Aquitaine” ( http://www.cnam-aquitaine.fr ) in the role of “Manager of scientific and technical heritage” in order to catalogue and valorise the scientific and technical contemporary heritage of the Aquitaine Region (France).
Recruited in 2001 by the IHA after several temporary and specific missions, Thierry was the instigator of the computerized catalogue of the Objects Collection Jean Plateau- IHA and its valorisation, of the development of the exhibitions and of the development of the new technologies
At the same time, Mauve Carbonell joined the Association “Memory of the Camp d’Aix-Les Milles” ( http://www.campdesmilles.org) in the role of Manager of the scientific contents.
Mauve has been the Scientific Secretary of IHA since 2006 and centred her work on the international opening of IHA, both by the development of relations with the researchers and other organisations throughout the world and also through the program of study grants and of the development of the Journal for the History of Aluminium (consult the news on this subject above mentioned).
Mauve will keep a part of her scientific responsibilities at IHA, especially the follow-up of research programs and study grants.
On 27th of May, Sophie Pelhivanian joined the IHA team for a six months mission centred on the management and the valorisation of the heritage. Thus, she continues and develops work started during a professional training of four months in the framework of Industrial, Scientific and Technical Heritage Master (second year), in the University of Savoie (France).
During this training, she worked with the different collections of IHA and also with the Aluminium Digital Library ( www.culturalu.org). Sophie will also be doing a part of the work previously done by Thierry Renaux.
Welcome to Sophie and good luck to Mauve and Thierry and success in their new projects! To both of them, many many thanks for all that they have done or already done for IHA!

Publication of the NEW Journal for the History of Aluminium!
 | | We invite you to discover the number 41 of our journal which is turning a new leaf. The changes cover all aspects: new typography, added emphasis on illustrations, lightening up of the fixed-content pages, more room for bilingual French/English pages: we want to concentrate this new Journal on the culture, history and heritage of aluminium in all its geographic diversity. It will reflect the IHA’s evolution over recent years: its systematic opening on to the world – as displayed in this issue by articles from Italian and Norwegian researchers and by the presentation of a set of unique objects of African and Asian “tribal” art from the Jean Plateau-IHA collection.
The summary of this issue is as follows :
Jean Plateau, Ivan Grinberg, Thierry Renaux, Aluminium and Tribal Arts in the Jean Plateau-IHA Collection
Marco Bertilorenzi, The Italian Aluminium Industry : Cartels, Multinationals and the Autarkic Phase, 1917-1943

Bijoux Art déco et avant-garde to the musée des Arts décoratifs
 | | From March 19 to July 12, 2009, the museum of the Arts décoratifs (Decorative Arts Museum) in Paris presents the exhibition Bijoux Art déco et avant-garde. Jean Després et les bijoutiers modernes (Art deco and Avant-Garde Jewellery. Jean Després and the Modern Jewellers).
More than three hundred jewels and goldsmith pieces from the 1930’s are gathered in this new exhibition. The various artists are all renown through the modernity of their creations: as regards, the goldsmith jeweller Jean Després, the jewellers such as Jean Fouquet, Raymond Templier, Jeanne Boivin, Suzanne Belperron or a decorator which was inspired by finery, as Jean Dunand.
Objects of the French jeweller Gérard Sandoz (1902-1995) are also exhibited, in particular a cigarette case decorated with a Tracta car, from the Grégoire-Aluminium Pechiney Collection.

Publication of PhD thesis
 | | Mauve Carbonell, Scientific Secretary of IHA, has published: Des hommes à l’origine de l’Europe. Biographies des membres de la Haute Autorité de la CECA [Men at the Origin of Europe. Biographies of Members of the High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community], Aix-en-Provence, P.U.P., 2008, 290 p. This book is available in bookshops and/or to the Publications de l’université de Provence.
This book comes from her PhD in History, defended in 2006 and supervised by Philippe Mioche, professor in the university of Provence, in which she explored the early hours of the European construction through men who embodied this development.
Presentation: The institutional mechanisms, the political, economic and legal evolution of fifty years of European integration are generally known. But what about the men? Of course, many works have been written on the emblematic figures and the heroes of the European integration. On the other hand, all those who made Europe an everyday reality are unrecognized. So it is the biographies of these members of the High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) that are explored in this book. Nineteen men worked in Luxemburg between 1952 and 1967. They belong to the myth of the pioneer institution, synonym of peace and of European reconciliation. What was the reality of their career path and professional lives? Where did they come from? What did they do during World War II and the Reconstruction? How did they become European? What is the “place” of the High Authority in their lives? The biographical analysis – answering these questions – brings a new point of view on the leaders of the first community and then on the European institutions at and from their beginnings.

IHA at the Saint-Étienne International Design biennial, November 15-30, 2008
| | On Friday, November 21st, 2008, IHA will take part in the conference organised by the Institut des études régionales et des patrimoines (regional research and heritage institute - IERP) on the history and memory of kitchen utensils at Jean Monnet University in Saint-Étienne, France, as part of the International Design Biennial. The IHA’s Mauve Carbonell and Thierry Renaux will speak on: “From the saucepan to the crumb tray – Institute for the History of Aluminium in support of a heritage” For the program of the conference, click here.
Summary: The main missions of Institute for the History of Aluminium, a not-for-profit association founded in 1986, are to develop research, conserve and enhance heritage and disseminate knowledge. In IHA’s work on aluminium, the theme of the metal’s use in household objects is commonly raised. Produced industrially since the late 19th century, aluminium became part of everyday life in France during the 1920’s. Established as indispensable in the post-war period, this “symbol of modernity” replaced conventional materials in applications from cooking equipment to milk jars via packaging. Several examples illustrate this history and the resulting heritage: the birth of the aluminium industry and the first attempts at household use; the multiplication of uses for the metal unveiled at the 1936 Salon des Arts Ménagers; and the boom in aluminium in traditional Cameroonian society in the 1960’s, particularly by the spread of aluminium saucepans and stockpots.

Publication
| | Hélène Frouard, former Scientific Secretary of the IHA, has just published her PhD: Du coron au HLM – Patronat et logement social (1894-1953), Rennes : Presses universitaires de Rennes, 2008. The book is available in bookshops (in France) or directly by the PUR here.
This book has been published with the support of the Institute for the History of Aluminium. One of the principal themes of the book is the housing policy in the Aluminium Industry in France (particularly Pechiney and Ugine).
Summary: A century ago, the Republic invented public housing. This book offers a stimulating reinterpretation of a seemingly familiar story, revealing the little-known role played at the time by French management. From sordid barracks for singles to foremen’s villas, from precarious rental contracts to home ownership, manufacturers were constantly involved, owning more than 300,000 workers’ housing units in the 1930’s. It comes as no surprise that public authorities, struggling to build the first cheap housing, tried to bring in such a dynamic participant. Various methods of cooperation were explored until the “1 % logement” law was passed in 1953. This compromise, under which businesses have to invest 1% of their wage bill in housing programmes, is the foundation of contemporary housing policies in France. At the crossroads of art history and political and social history, this work was awarded the Prix du Comité d’Histoire de la Sécurité Sociale (social security history committee award) in 2005.

Defence of PhD
| | Didier Bensadon, former scholar of the IHA, defended his PhD in Management on December 11, 2007 in Nantes at the Maison des Sciences de l’Homme on the subject of: Group accounting in France (1929-1985): Analysis of the introduction and diffusion process of an accounting technique, under the supervision of Yannick Lemarchand. Didier Bensadon obtained the mention Très Honorable avec les félicitations du jury à l’unanimité. His thesis is based on Pechiney casework.
Summary: This research analyses the introduction and diffusion process of group accounting in France. Through the analysis of archives from companies, public or private organisms and through the study of accounting handbooks and treaties, three periods have been identified.
During the first one, 1929 -1945, managers and stakeholders expressed the need of accounting information on the group. However even if group accounting is already practised in the United States and United Kingdom, it isn’t well-known by French accountancy practitioners and consequently is not applied in France, where accounting standards can’t be found.
The second period is from 1945 to 1968. The French accountancy practitioners became interested by group accounting as soon as 1951. In the early 1960s, managers had to face the problem of subsidiaries tracking; they also wanted to follow the requirements of American banks and financial markets. They consequently became familiar with group accounting. The French state tackled the issue and, in 1968, the Conseil national de la comptabilité set up a methodology for group accounts applied to French companies.
During the third period, 1968-1985, the Commission des operations de bourse played a crucial part in the diffusion of group accounting. Congresses, accounting reviews, and the accounting education field took part in this diffusion of this technique. The law of January, 3 1983 made it compulsory for public companies to disclosure their financial consolidated statements. The law of January, 3 1985 broadened this obligation to all companies, after the transcription of the seventh European Economic Community directive in the French corporate law.

Alucam, an African destiny...
| | ...50 years of aluminium in Cameroon, 1957-2007, under the supervision of Maurice Laparra and Ivan Grinberg, Aix-en-Provence : REF.2C, 2007.
The writing of this book, published with the support of the Alucam company, was coordinated by the IHA. Eight authors contributed to the work to obtain a bilingual book English-French, with more than a hundred coloured pictures.
“Created in Cameroon in 1957, Alucam produces today 100 000 tonnes of aluminium per year, of which two thirds are exported, and manufactures corrugated sheet and household utensils for markets in Africa. This book relates a story spanning 50 years of history, starting in colonial France and taking place in a country that became independent in 1960. The company that was created and for many years managed by a flagship of French industry, Pechiney, in the framework of a lasting partnership with the Republic of Cameroon, is now building its future as part of the Rio Tinto Alcan group. The eight Cameroonian and French specialists who have contributed to this book have attempted to analyse Alucam’s impact on Cameroon’s economy and society, its contribution to the industrialisation of Cameroon, the social and organisational models it introduced and the effects of globalisation.”

Daniel ABWA, Professor of History at the University of Yaounde I.
Mauve CARBONELL, Historian, scientific secretary of the IHA.

Publication of the book Pechiney?... Vendu!
| | Pechiney?... Vendu! [Pechiney?... Sold!]. A book of Philippe Thaure which traces the “almost programmed death” of one of the flowers of French industry.
The Presses de l’école des Mines (the publication office of the French Mines School) publish a work which “follows, since 1960’s, the actions of diversification effected under the influence of politicians and engineers lobbies, the ill-timed or over-diversified investments and the errors of strategy which lead to the almost programmed death of Pechiney”. The author, Philippe Thaure, with his intimate knowledge of this industry, a civil engineering minor, a former employee of Pechiney, ended his career with Alcoa. Through public and privates archives and unpublished interviews with past managers of Pechiney and Alcan, he purposes an informed and enlightened reading of the history of the French producer of aluminium.

Publication of the book L’aluminium et Paul Morin au Moulin noir (1857-1890)
| | We are especially happy to present you the book written by Jean Plateau et Thierry Renaux L’aluminium et Paul Morin au Moulin noir (1857-1890). Un maire pour Nanterre, un métal pour l’industrie. Born from a profitable collaboration between the IHA and the Nanterre Historical Society, this book was issued on the occasion of the European Heritage Days. It traces the unknown industrial adventure of the first aluminium factory created in 1857, the factory of the Moulin noir in Nanterre. This industrial adventure marks the fortune of a man with an unusual destiny: Paul Morin, French politician during the Third Republic who gave his name to the first company which produced aluminium in the factory. The book of J. Plateau et T. Renaux, which will become a reference work, is written in a clear and pleasant style and is enriched with numerous coloured illustrations of the most beautiful objects from the chemical period of the Jean Plateau collection.
You can order it by the Nanterre Historical Society or send us the bulletin of subscription you will find here .

IHA associated with the University of Grenoble in a long-term research program on the aluminium
| | The IHA and the University of Grenoble took the initiative to launch a "programme pluri-formations" (PPF) which has obtained the agreement of the French Ministry of Research. The program will be financed during four years. This program, called ”Bauxite/Alumina/Aluminium: local impacts of world industry – comparative aspects”, has the ambition to work in a multi-disciplinary and comparative perspective on the aspects of the sustainable development in the aluminium sector. During the next four years, several scientific projects could be organised. The financial resources will notably enable the support of student research. Workshops with our academic partners and a conference will be also held.
For the University of Grenoble, Anne Dalmasso, associate professor, is the person in charge of the project. The PPF also associates numerous partners: the French universities of Aix-Marseille, Nantes, Paris Dauphine, Paris IV, the EHESS and the following foreign teams: the universities of McGill (Canada), Trois-Rivières (Canada), Genève, the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Trondheim, Norvège) and the Centre for History (Dornoch, United Kingdom).

March 23rd and 24th: conference on law and business history
| | The conference on LAW AND BUSINESS HISTORY (18th-20th centuries) scheduled as part of the Simiand workshop and with the financial support of EEP, the Gould foundation and LEA-INRA will take place on March 23rd and 24th on the Jourdan campus (48 Boulevard Jourdan, 75014 Paris, France ).
How do legal constraints affect the creation, reorganisation and disappearance of companies? How do law and legal procedures influence conflicts within a company or between it and its environment? How do companies cope with legal constraints and do they organise themselves to drive the evolution of those constraints? Do they voice a demand for specific legal forms (Ltd., PLC, etc.) or for other types of institutions in order to manage conflict or failure? How can the cost and efficiency of a legal system be assessed and how can it be transformed? Given the persistent failure of shareholders and financial markets in the face of executive embezzlement, how should monitoring systems be understood over time and across the differences between countries? Corporate law is neither a recent invention nor a corpus that is frozen in time. It is a more or less consistent set of institutions that evolve on a multisecular basis in a close relationship to their environments. Recent developments in economics on this issue often lack historical depth but also a sound knowledge of law and the political or institutional constraints that weigh on regulation. This conference’s methodological approach is to favour work that brings together a conceptual and an empirical, especially quantitative analysis of the above questions or other issues in line with the theme of the symposium.
The conference is organised by Pierre-Cyrille Hautcoeur (EHESS-PSE), Jean-Laurent Rosenthal (CalTech, PSE) and Alessandro Stanziani (CNRS-IDHE).
The programme containing the various speakers’ papers is given at the following address: http://www.paris-jourdan.ens.fr/ydepot/actua/COLLOQ/2007_03_23/
